WLW is a great 'One Stop Shop' for metal clay tools and materials. The website is clear and easy to use, which is good when ordering from overseas.

I really appreciate the friendly service, excellent communication and efficient shipping.

I'm always happy to recommend WLW!

Fun Inlay Project with Mixed Metal Clays

Do you work with mixed metals? If you haven't tried it this is a good time to get out that Copper and Bronze Clays and go for it.

Here's an easy quick overview of an inlay project to make a pair of earrings:

  1. apply a release agent onto a deep texture like our fabulous Texture K line of rubber textures. This one is TL1200

  2. roll out a slab of Copper clay (for this project I recommend Hadar's Copper Clay) HC001

  3. cut out two circle shapes using a pattern cutter, circle template, or QuikArt stencil

  4. let the pieces dry, sand the edges and refine the pieces

  5. using more Copper Clay fill in the leaves that extend to the edge, filling in any concave areas that are 1/8" to the edge. This will assure a better bond between the metals and avoid any from chipping off as a result of shrinkage during firing.

  6. using White Bronze Clay (HC003) press the clay into the concave areas created by the deep texture

  7. sand, refine and drill a hole

  8. fire as directed by the manufacturer

  9. using Baldwin Patina, patina the pieces. See the blog for a video to see Hadar Jacobsen demonstrate the use of Baldwin's Patina on the metal.

  10. assemble onto Niobium Earwires which are not only hypo-allergenic but also a perfect match to the bronze and copper colored metal!

Hadar's blog is an excellent source of tutorials on anything that has to do with mixed metal clays. Even if you work in BronzClay or CopprClay you can take these tutorials and use them in your work.

She's got several fantastic books as well available with a brand new book coming this month.
